My Family History

I come from a long generation of Falkland Islanders. On my fathers side John Betts born 1824 came to the Falklands onboard a ship around 1854. We have so far been unable to discover where he came from or on what ship; so if anyone has any information they think might be relevant I would be keen to hear from them. He married Margaret Johnson in 1858; they had a large family of I think 17 children. One of which; John Cranmer Betts born 29/12/1859 (my great, great, grandfather) married Elizabeth Annie Kiddle in 1883. They in turn had six children and so on it goes.

On my mothers side the Paice family arrived in the Falklands in 1869, sailing onboard “Victoria Tatham”. They originated from Old Basing. Nathaniel and Sarah Paice (nee Bond) had 12 children one of which was George Paice my great, great, Grandfather. So many coincidences arise when one starts tracing family history. I was born and brought up on Pebble Island (where the Betts family have long been prominent) it should seem a coincidence to me that I should end up making my home at Main Point where my Grandfather Bill Paice was born I had no idea of this until I had been living here for several years, unfortunately he died when I was a baby and I never knew him.

The Porter family arrived in the Falklands in 1876 from North Peterton in Somerset. Joseph and Elizabeth Porter (nee Williams) had 14 children. One of which was Arthur “Pop” Porter my great, great Grandfather. He married Mary Coutts and “Nanny Porter” had 11 children, one of which was my Mum’s mother Annie who married Bill Paice. After the death of Bill she later married Henry Betts a grandson of John Cranmer Betts. So my family tree becomes a little complicated but I think I can safely call myself a true Kelper (someone born on the Falklands). So I would be interested to hear from anyone who believe they may possibly be a very distant relative?
